A wellbeing app that borrows the language of quitting smoking.

Chain Scroll is rated 13+. It uses the vocabulary of quitting smoking to describe a scrolling habit. It contains no tobacco product, no depiction of anyone smoking, and nothing that encourages it.

What the metaphor is doing

The smoking reference comes from my own experience of quitting. Chain Scroll is for people who want to open Instagram less, and it borrows the language of quitting smoking because that language is unusually good at describing a compulsive habit: the reflexive reach, the "just one more," the pack that runs down whether or not you were paying attention.

A "light-up" is a scroll break in an app you've chosen to limit. A "pack" is a way to count your scroll breaks for the day. A "carton" is your week. That's the whole extent of it. Nothing in the app depicts smoking, glamorizes it, or offers a path to a tobacco product — every pack design is original artwork, and no real brand appears anywhere.

What isn't in the app

Who it's for

People who want to be deliberate about their own phone use — in practice, mostly adults who already suspect their thumb is making decisions for them. Chain Scroll is a self-directed tool: you choose which apps to limit, and you can turn it off whenever you like. It is not a parental-control product and has no features for monitoring or restricting anyone else's device.

A note for parents

The App Store rating is 13+. Parents should review the smoking theme and decide whether it suits their family. If a teenager does use it, it works for them exactly as it works for anyone: their own Screen Time, their own choice of apps, a pack that counts their own scroll breaks — and nothing is reported to anyone, including you. The cigarette framing is a metaphor for a habit, not an introduction to one, but it is a cigarette framing, and we'd rather you looked at the app yourself before deciding it's right for them. If you'd prefer something without the theming, Apple's own Screen Time — which Chain Scroll is built on top of — does the underlying work and is free.
