Why a wellbeing app carries an 18+ badge.
Chain Scroll is rated for adults because the entire app is built on a cigarette metaphor — a pack of 20, lighting one up, stubbing it out. We answered Apple's tobacco-reference question at its strongest setting, on purpose. We'd rather carry an honest rating than a convenient one.
What the metaphor is doing
The framing is a cessation framing, not an endorsement. Chain Scroll is for people who want to open Instagram less, and it borrows the language of quitting smoking because that language is unusually good at describing a compulsive habit: the reflexive reach, the "just one more," the pack that runs down whether or not you were paying attention.
Nothing in the app depicts smoking approvingly, and nothing encourages it. There is no tobacco product, no purchase path to one, and no real brand anywhere in the app — every pack design is original artwork.
What isn't in the app
- No user-generated content, messaging, or social feed
- No advertising of any kind
- No gambling, simulated gambling, or loot boxes
- No violence, sexual content, or profanity

- No web browser or unrestricted external content
Who it's for
Adults who want to be deliberate about their own phone use. Chain Scroll is a self-directed tool: you choose which apps to limit and you can turn it off whenever you like. It is not a parental-control product and has no features for monitoring or restricting anyone else's device.
A note for parents
If a teenager in your life wants something like this, the honest answer is that Apple's own Screen Time — which Chain Scroll is built on top of — does the underlying work and is free. Our rating reflects the cigarette theming, not a hazard in the app itself. Use your judgment about whether that framing is right for them.
